Job Description and Duties

This position is located at the DMV Headquarters in Sacramento.

This Peace Officer position, subject to P.O.S.T. requirements, serves in a law enforcement capacity and conducts comprehensive, confidential background investigations on both sworn and non-sworn candidates for the Division. Responsibilities include meeting with and interviewing applicants; verifying required documentation; and thoroughly researching, analyzing, and documenting their personal, employment, financial, academic/education, military, legal/criminal, and driving histories. The role also involves interviewing acquaintances, employers, neighbors, and other relevant sources. Additional duties include reviewing prior background investigations, conducting follow-up interviews to resolve discrepancies, reporting significant findings to supervisors, and preparing formal investigative background reports for management review; and performing other duties in accordance with California Penal Code section 830.3 as required.

This position will be filled as one year Limited-Term, Full Time if the selected candidate needs to complete the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) requirements. Upon successful completion, the incumbent will be appointed as Permanent, Full Time. If the selected candidate has already met POST requirements through a basic academy, then they will be appointed Permanent, Full Time upon hire.

The Salary Range shown is the minimum and maximum for a full-time appointment. Moving and relocation expenses will not be reimbursed for this position.

Working Conditions

Works in a multistory building, in an office setting, or outside traveling by car. While indoors, the temperature and humidity are reasonably controlled, but while out of doors, the employee is exposed to climatic conditions. Will be sitting standing and moving around the office environment; occasional lifting up to 10 pounds. Will be accessing computers, typing/data entry, handling phone calls or in-person contact with subjects, employers, associates, references, and other knowledgeable individuals and review appropriate records to obtain facts to resolve all material issues in a case or to establish the background, reputation, character, suitability, or qualifications of the candidate(s). A current driver's license, reliable personal vehicle, and willingness to travel daily in support of assignments. Equipment and work aids used consist of: vehicle police radio, safety equipment, e.g., shotgun, semi-automatic duty weapon, badge, handcuffs, handcuff case, flashlight (heavy duty), soft body armor, ammunition, holster, kubaton, and chemical agents, ASP, battering ram and Haligan tool.
