Job Description

The Reading League, Inc.(TRL) is a nonprofit organization based in Syracuse, New York, with a mission to advance the awareness, understanding, and use of evidence-aligned reading instruction. TRL focuses on improving literacy outcomes for ALL students. By using a body of knowledge known as the science of reading-which culminates over 60 years of research-we can improve literacy instruction and outcomes. We believe that all students deserve to learn to read, and all teachers can teach them.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the academic strategies, policies, and initiatives of The Reading League. The CAO will work closely with other executive leaders and staff to ensure that TRL’s offerings, curriculum, and teaching methods are innovative, effective, and aligned with our mission, vision, and goals. The CAO plays a critical role in the overall growth and impact of the organization on a global level.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provide strategic leadership for the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of professional development programs and training solutions
  • Be an active voice for the science of reading by maintaining and utilizing a working knowledge of significant developments and trends 
  • Maintain and develop impactful professional development procedures, approaches, and routines 
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Director to identify market trends, client needs, and opportunities for new learning products and services to build a comprehensive marketing plan
  • Oversee the academic and professional development budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources to support strategic priorities
  • Ensure that educational programs are mission-aligned, high-quality, community-centered, and strategically positioned to advance strategic goals while supporting operational sustainability and accountability
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate short- and long-range plans to facilitate the growth of entrepreneurial and professional development programs
  • Identify, evaluate, and develop partnerships to grow a new pipeline of professional development programs; cultivate existing partnerships
  • Work with the Operations Director to develop effective administrative and operational systems, including the implementation of policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in reading instruction or a related field required; Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred
  • A deep knowledge of the vast body of scientific research literature related to reading and writing, the science of learning, and the science of instruction is required
  • 5-10 years of leadership experience required
  • Not-for-profit experience preferred
  • A strong track record of developing and implementing professional development programs
  • Strong leadership abilities, including collaboration, planning, delegation, program development, and task facilitation
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and nurture positive working relationships at all levels of the organization, prioritizing diplomacy, mutual respect, and open communication
  • Ability to convey and embrace The Reading League’s mission and values
  • Knowledge of workplace learning strategies and industry practices related to learning, performance improvement, training delivery, learning technologies, and instructional design
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of the science of reading and Structured Literacy Experience, developing, implementing, and overseeing literacy programs grounded in reading science
  • Familiarity with the science of reading in relation to diverse learner populations, including but not limited to English learner/emergent bilingual students, students with reading difficulties, and historically underserved communities
  • Ability to advance program and revenue goals by working collaboratively with others who may have valuable insights 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all audiences, including staff, clients, business partners, and community leaders
  • Knowledge of grant reporting, data analysis, and impact measurement of established goals
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to design and deliver professional development opportunities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and customer relationship management software

SALARIES AND BENEFITS

  • Salary range $150,000 - $165,000
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403b, life insurance

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
  • Travel Required
  • Work is performed in a typical office setting in Syracuse, New York, and onsite at a variety of venues
